The Metrics Database is a full-featured database written in Microsoft Access for use in tracking software metrics information. It provides a means to collect development statistics in real-time, permitting managers to review status that is up-to-the-minute at their desktops.
Full support for an extensive set of software metrics is provided, including tracking of project information, Computer Software Configuration Items (CSCIs), software components, software changes and trouble reports, and formal inspections. A list of more than 200 commonly collected development activities is provided and is infinitely customizable by the local system administrator. Detailed user interfaces are available for Microsoft Windows and the World Wide Web.

| Intuitive, notebook-oriented interface. Forms are separated by "tabs", which can be selected to navigate from form to form. | |
| Built-in data integrity checks don't allow users to enter incorrect data, or to remove data that affects the integrity of the database. Extensive use of pull-down menus and selection boxes limits choices available. | |
| It is structured to be compatible with the most extensive metrics collection schema readily available: the Metrics Data Collection System, created by the Software Engineering Laboratory ("SEL") at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Sites wishing to collect only part of this data, or to add local data elements, can easily do so without losing compatibility with other sites' data. | |
| Automatic saving of data when forms are closed or individual records are traversed limits exposure to system crashes, power surges, etc. | |
| Built-in networking allows for the database to reside on a remote PC, where several users can access the same data while working from their desktops. This release includes the data and interface for installation on one PC. | |
| On-screen preview of reports saves paper, allows routing to remote printers, or saves in word processor format for editing. | |
| Rudimentary security prevents users from entering any data other than their own, but is not so ironclad as to prevent recovery of data in an emergency. | |
| Online help is available at any time by pressing [F1]. | |
| Database structure is built to allow import of existing SEL data with minimal effort by the Database Administrator. |
